
Dr. John Callewaert has been the director of the Institute for Community and Environment and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Sciences and Education at Colby-Sawyer College since 2000. The Institute for Community and Environment administers an interdisciplinary undergraduate environmental studies program and promotes community-based research. Dr. Callewaert’s teaching and research interests include environmental sociology, environmental justice, environmental ethics and community-based research. These activities are enriched by his numerous community collaborations, including board memberships with several environmental organizations and funded projects of the National Science Foundation and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.
Dr. Callewaert holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment. While completing his doctorate, Dr. Callewaert served on the board of the Edward Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning and acted as the faculty advisor for a student-facilitated service learning course on environmental justice. Prior to that, Dr. Callewaert worked as the Community Service Coordinator at Loyola University Chicago. In that position he coordinated opportunities between several hundred students and dozens of community-based organizations. He also coordinated a variety of programs on social justice and community development.
