IPP Environmental Physics

Hi Friends:

We have created a Google group called IPP Environmental Physics (and we operate under the Umbrella of IPP, which is an NPO/NGO) working to spread education into poorer and under priviledged countries.

The name of the group, as it suggests, is about the environment and how can we solve environmental issues through physics. By now most of us must have realized that the majority of our planets' environmental issues like global warming, pollution, the energy crisis, and electronic waste can be understood from the perspective of physics.

So I think it will be more fun for us to actually go and seek such solutions, and who knows, one day our group can be a success story.

We invite volunteer members to our group. We also require some volunteers to manage the group. Everyone's invited.

March 2008 IPP News: Virginia Lawrence, IPP Communications Technology Director, collaborated with Dr. Carolyn Hodges in a joint IP Project in Bornemouth, England.

Our very own Virginia Lawrence, IPP Project Manager, Assisting C.E.O., Commuications Technology Director, and Webmaster, has been participating to a small degree in submitting internet research to the Sub-Saharan Africa Low Bandwidth / High Bandwidth project that has been ongoing in Bournemouth, England. Her involvement, though limited, is also an invitation to other IPP Fellows and Board members to reach out and join in the fun. Start helping other people in and outside of the IPP framework.

During February 2008, an IPP Board member featured a training workshop on Wastewater Treatment and Environmental Management at Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Dr. Vikram Pattarkine, a Board member with IPP, conducted an international training workshop on wastewater treatment and environmental management in February 2008 at Dhaka, the Bangladesh capital. Adroit Environment Consultants Ltd., a local consulting firm, organized the program. Attendees included senior government officials, industry leaders, engineers, and wastewater treatment plant operators. Dr. Pattarkine was the lead faculty, supported by Dr. Nasir Uddin Khan Adroit.

Topics covered included:

• Wastewater treatment fundamentals
• Biological nutrient removal
• Wastewater treatment technologies
• Energy-efficient aeration systems
• Enhanced lagoon systems for wastewater treatment
• Environmental impact assessment of development projects
• Environmental audit
• Status of textile industry wastewater treatment in Bangladesh
• Energy efficiency in industrial processes

The training was greatly appreciated by the attendees, who learned about modern biological wastewater treatment techniques. One of the attendees, M.D. Julfikar Sheikh, remarked: "It was indeed a very nice opportunity for me to have attended a summary training program conducted by you. It was really exciting to learn about some of the new technologies that you introduced."

Bangladesh has an immediate need for textile effluent treatment; the workshop served as an important first step in capacity building in the country.

IPP Board Member Rajendra Kurup chaired the International Sustainable Engineering Conference, held in Oct. and Nov. 2007

Our own Rajendra Kurup, a Board member of the International Professors Project, chaired the International Conference on Sustainable Engineering in October and November 2007. The conference was sponsored by the Society for Sustainability and Environmental Engineering, and was supported by funds from the Perth government and local businesses. This conference was held in Perth, Western Australia between 31st October and 2 November 2007.

Sustainability has arrived as the major driving force for innovation and development in the twenty-first century. This conference was a showcase for the role of engineering in delivering sustainable outcomes. The conference was an outstanding program of international and local speakers who presented solutions to some of our most pressing problems. Keynote speakers presented examples of international best practice on topics including:

Impacts of Climate Change
Cleaner Production and Zero Emissions
Sustainable Water Management
Energy Efficiency and Conservation
Sustainable Urban Development
Sustainability Assessment and Reporting, for those who have received no formal training in sustainability, presented an opportunity for them to learn how leading organizations and practitioners implement sustainability in their work. IPP is a Google Grant Recipient:

The International Professors Project has been awarded a Google Grant for service in using technology to assist in the development of higher education in low-income countries. We are now able to spend $10,000 a month on adverts with Google's strategic assistance.

Debbie Rabina presented IPP at the annual conference of ALISE:

Debbie Rabina presented IPP at the annual conference of ALISE (Association of Library and Information Science Educators) held this January in Seattle. Its theme was Habits of Mind and Practice: Preparing Reflective Professionals. The International Education SIG presented a panel of five speakers who spoke about Optimizing Teaching Experiences Abroad. The panel was well attended and the audience had an opportunity to hear, most for the first time, about IPP and the type of people IPP seems to attract: many young people with academic credentials who are choosing an alternative to the traditional academic track route. Other panelists included someone from Fulbright, and three individuals who told their personal stories of teaching abroad in Indonesia, American Samoa, and India.

Vikram Pattarkine: Press Release from Brinjac Engineering

Brinjac Engineering is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Vikram Pattarkine as the latest member of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) of the Chesapeake Bay Program. Dr. Pattarkine will provide expertise in wastewater treatment technologies and water quality management, which are currently very high priority subjects in efforts to improve environmental conditions in the Bay and its watershed. Dr. Pattarkine will provide his expertise by answering technical questions arising from management and policy debates on these issues. He will also lend his perspective and professional opinion to the much broader array of issues that STAC considers. STAC is composed of approximately three dozen scientists and engineers from a wide range of disciplines. Collectively this group provides technical advice and recommendations to the state and federal agencies comprising the Bay Program. The STAC membership also serves as a link to the larger scientific community in the region, working to insure that all management and policy decisions are based on the best available information. Dr. Pattarkine will serve as a valuable link between STAC and the Water Environment Federation, where he actively participates in technical committee activities.

Linde-Laursen Is a New International Professor

Professor Anders Linde-Laursen (above, with students, outside the Nordic Center at Fudan U., China) teaches Anthropology and International Studies in the School of World Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has ongoing teaching projects at Fudan University, Shanghai, and at VCUQ, VCU's art and design campus in Education City, Doha, Qatar. (read more)

IPP Fellows Lead Kazakhstan Seminar

IPP Fellows Professors Rick Wilk and Anne Pyburn, anthropologist and archaeologist, both of Indiana University, are shown here conducting a seminar for social science professors. They were each teaching this summer in Kazakhstan. The professors studying with them are from universities in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Usbekistan and Tajikistan. Rick's mission was to introduce the idea of applied anthropology and culturally appropriate development. The Seminar for Central Asian Social Science Professors was funded by the Soros Foundation. In addition to her work in Kazakhstan, Anne spent time in Brazil this summer teaching ethics and public archeology to Brazilian university faculty. She also has been working on a project designed to help Central Asian countries prepare to deal with looting of cultural property, and managing heritage in ways that do not promote ethnic rivalry and conflict.

President Vang Honored

In July, Hanoi University of Foreign Studies President Vang and HUFS were honored by receiving the noble award, the Order of Independence from the President of Vietnam for outstanding achievement. Only the Order of Ho Chi Minh medal is a greater honor. HUFS' International Relations Department is rapidly developing, and a new IT Department is now established through which all courses will be taught in English. Details of English learning via IT will be sent to IPP as the program progresses.

Kim and Yang Publish on Internationalization

IPP Fellow Dr. Terri Kim and Board Member Rui Yang have just published IPP-relevant papers; Rui was one of the editors of the publication: International Education in the Asia-Pacific Region. In the publication  we note Terri's "Internationalization of Higher Education in South Korea: Reality, Rhetoric and Disparities in Academic Culture and Identities," and Rui's "Internationalization, Indigenisation and Educational Research in China."

Yang Completes Research Project

IPP Fellow Rui Yang has recently completed research on developing world universities as a visiting research professor at Hong Kong University. Professor Yang is currently teaching at Monash University, in Melbourne, Australia.

Krate Continues Information Distribution

In the last three months, IPP Founder and International Professor Ron Krate has sent thousands of new research papers from around the globe to administrators and professors at Hanoi University of Foreign Studies and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. Ron has organized volunteers to send scholarly papers to the Institute of History, Hanoi, and is collaborating with officials of the African Association of Universities to arrange to send academic and professional papers mined from various search engines to African universities. In addition, Ron has contributed to the strategic thinking of administrators in each university: on academic governance; in-service professor training; and professors' professional development training.
